If you are planning a fall trip to New England or Atlantic Canada, timing is the first question, peak color is a moving target. It runs on latitude and elevation. Color starts in the north and the high country and rolls south and downhill over about six weeks. Here is the working calendar I use, north to south, so you can line a sailing or a land trip up against it.

Quebec and the far north: late September into early October

The Charlevoix region and the higher ground north of Quebec City turn first, often peaking in the last week of September. The Laurentians and the Eastern Townships follow in the first week or two of October, and Montreal tends to peak around mid-October. If you want the northern end of a cruise itinerary at its best, an early-October arrival at Quebec City or Saguenay is the target.

Northern New England high country: around October 1

The Canadian border country, northwestern Maine, and the higher elevations turn through the last week of September. The White Mountains and Vermont's Northeast Kingdom generally light up over the first weekend of October. Elevation matters as much as latitude here: a mountain summit can be past peak while the valley floor below it is still green.

Mid-coast Maine and the Maritimes: first and second weeks of October

Coastal and mid-coast Maine, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island run a little later than the interior high country. Nova Scotia generally peaks in the second week of October, with the Cape Breton Highlands turning first, often by the first week. Northern New Brunswick starts as early as mid-September and peaks by the end of the month, while the southern and coastal parts of the province reach their best in early October. These are the ports a fall cruise spends the most time in, which is part of why early October is the sweet spot for a Canada and New England sailing.

Southern and coastal New England: mid to late October

Massachusetts, the Berkshires, and the Pioneer Valley tend to peak in mid-October. Coastal Connecticut and Rhode Island run later still, often late October into early November. If your trip is on the back half of October, you are looking south for your color, not north.

How to use this

Match the region you will actually be standing in to the week you will be there. On a cruise, that means reading the itinerary port by port against this calendar, because the ship moves you through several of these bands in a single sailing. Direction matters too, more than most people realize.
